Stories of Sovereignty from England

Here are a few stories about the sovereign intervention of the Lord to protect, preserve, and provide for believers in England. They echo the stories that many readers posted on LinkedIn group discussions of the topic. Some would call these coincidence; believers know that they are the result of our Lord's intervening in our lives.

Once, while Paul was driving along motorway, he saw cars ahead stopping suddenly; God showed him a lane in the middle of the motorway to drive into. He did so, and the car behind him ran into the car in front of him. Though shaken, he was not injured.

Only a few months ago, I was delayed by 10 minutes in going to church. When I went down the road about a mile, I found that there had been a fatal car crash (out of control driver going too fast). It was where I would have been had I not been delayed.

On a trip away from home, our vehicle broke down and needed repair. We went on the bus to a small bank (days before cash machines were everywhere); I had pass-book but no money in that account; Paul had money in his account, but had not brought his pass-book. The bank clerk noticed that we lived in a village he knew, 100 miles away. He asked us the name of the pub in the village to confirm that we lived there. Of course, we knew it, and he gave us the money!

On a trip to another area, we ran out of petrol and started walking back to a petrol station which was about a mile away; some American tourists stopped to help and took us to the petrol station with a can and got us back to the car. Six weeks later, we had a day trip to another area at the coast; in the middle of the hundreds of tourists on the beach we came across our friendly Americans again!

Mary was taking some friends home at night when the car had a flat tyre. A young man appeared from nowhere, changed the tyre, then disappeared before they could thank him. Mary was convinced it was an angel.

Mary felt a sudden strong urge to pray for a particular lady; she did so until the feeling left her. Later she found out that at the moment, the lady narrowly missed being hit by a cap stone from the door of a building.

Paul and I were planning to visit the States to attend a friend's wedding. Bizarrely, we felt the Holy Spirit tell us not to take the trip. The day after the scheduled wedding my father-in-law died suddenly; he had been ill, but it was an unexpected dash into hospital.

A guy at our church got baptised some months ago. He had been a Christian many years and wondered if he was doing the right thing getting baptised. He asked the Lord to confirm it by someone giving a message in tongues. Now it is not the usual practice for tongues and interpretation at baptisms. My friend's husband gave the message in tongues; she was a bit embarrassed at the timing. Then the pastor gave the interpretation.
